Don't Shoot the Dog! by Karen Pryor – an excellent book on behavior modification to improve your abilities as a trainer.

Playtraining Your Dog by Patricia Gail Burnham – excellent book for learning how to train and develop a rapport with your dog while teaching it obedience. 1986 Out of print. @ $11

How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition) by The Monks of New Skete - a multi-purpose book about the many aspects of owning and training a companion dog. Reprint 2002 @$17

Expert Obedience Training for Dogs, Fourth Edition by Winifred Gibson Strickland Carson – another excellent obedience training book. @ $20

Building Blocks for Performance by Bobbie Anderson, an excellent text on building the competitive partner that you desire.  Ms. Anderson does an wonderful job of "connecting the dots", illustrating the cause and effect of both good and bad puppy raising and how it affects the final product - the dog you will be taking into the competitive arena.

BOOKS: Sheepdog Training

A Way of Life: Sheepdog Training, Handling and Trialling by H. Glynn Jones – an excellent herding training book. Revised 2002 Out of print used @$17

Sheepdog Training: An All Breed Approach by Mari Taggart – a good primer on all breed herding. Out of print - used from @ $10.21

The Farmer's Dog by John Holmes – excellent general observations, and discussions on instinct. The training methods are very dated. 1995 @ $18.95

Herding Dogs: Progressive Training by Vergil S. Holland 1994 $15.37

Lessons from a Stock Dog by two time National Herding Champion Bruce Fogt $34.  Mr. Fogt shares his trial-and-error experiences in raising his first Border Collie, experiences common to many of us in raising our first working herding puppy. 

MAGAZINES: Sheepdog Training

The Working Border Collie – a very good resource for trial and clinic dates, other publications and items for sale, plus it contains excellent training articles. While the magazine is oriented toward the Border Collie, much of the information is applicable to the other breeds of herding dogs.
